Cleanings and exams

A cleaning removes plaque and tartar from your teeth, and an exam checks your teeth, gums and mouth. They are for anyone who wants routine care at a calm pace.

If you are anxious, say so when you book. We can allow a longer visit, go step by step, or add nitrous oxide.

What happens

Usually one visit of about an hour. How often you come is your dentist's call.

  1. 01

Step 1: Check in and a talk

Your dentist or hygienist asks how you are and what has changed since last time, and answers your questions.

  2. 02

Step 2: X-rays, if they are needed

Your dentist decides whether you need X-rays, based on your history and what we see. You can ask why.

  3. 03

    Step 3: The cleaning

We clean above and below the gumline. Say if anything is sensitive. We can numb the area or pause.

  4. 04

    Step 4: The exam

Your dentist checks your teeth, gums and mouth, shows you what they see and explains your options.

  5. 05

Step 5: A plan, in writing

If anything needs work, you get a written plan and an estimate before any treatment.

Comfort, choices and care

  • Comfort

We can use a numbing gel, go in shorter stretches, and add nitrous oxide if you want it. Headphones and a blanket are here too.

  • Other choices, and waiting

You can ask for a cleaning in two shorter visits. If you've gone a long time without one, a deeper cleaning may be advised; your dentist explains why and what the options are.

  • Risks and after-care

Gums can bleed or feel tender for a day or two after a cleaning, and teeth can feel sensitive. Your dentist tells you what to expect and what to do if it lasts.

  • How it's billed

We file claims with dental plans for cleanings and exams. If you don't have a plan, you get a written estimate first.

Questions about cleanings and exams

How often do I need a cleaning?

Your dentist decides, based on your gums and your history. For some people it's twice a year; for others it's more or less.

Do I need X-rays every time?

No. Your dentist decides when you need them and tells you why.

What if I haven't been in years?

That's fine. We start where you are, and the first visit can be a talk and a tour.

What is a deep cleaning?

A deeper cleaning goes below the gumline, usually over more than one visit, when gums have pulled away from the teeth. Your dentist explains if you need one.
