Visits for dental fear

Some people avoid the dentist for years because of a bad visit, a gag reflex, or a fear of needles or being held down. A first visit here is a talk and a look at the room.

There is no exam unless you want one. You see the chair, the light and the tools, and you decide what happens next.

What happens

Go as slowly as you like. There is no schedule to meet.

  1. 01

Step 1: Tell us what scares you

On the phone, in the form, or in person. We write it in your chart so the dentist knows before you walk in.

  2. 02

Step 2: See the room first

Sit in the chair with the light off. Hold an instrument if you like.

  3. 03

Step 3: Agree on a signal

Raise your hand and we stop. We say what the next step is and ask before we do it.

  4. 04

Step 4: A short exam, if you want one

Many people start with a short visit and add time. You leave with a written plan and an estimate.

  5. 05

Step 5: Add comfort as you need it

Numbing gel first, headphones, a blanket, breaks, or sedation when you are ready for it.

Comfort, choices and care

  • Comfort

We can numb the area with a gel first and go slowly on the injection. Headphones, a blanket and sunglasses for the light are here if you want them. If you gag, say so, and we change what we do.

  • Other choices, and waiting

You can choose nitrous oxide, oral sedation or IV sedation for a later visit. Staying away from care doesn't make it easier, and a problem can grow quietly. We will tell you what we see and won't scold you.

  • Risks and after-care

A visit with no sedation carries the ordinary risks of dental care, and your dentist goes over them before any treatment. If you choose sedation later, its page lists the risks of that level.

  • How it's billed

A first visit with an exam or X-rays is billed at the practice's ordinary fees. You get the estimate in writing before any treatment.

Questions about visits for dental fear

What if I cry or panic?

We stop, and we give you time. Many people do, and it doesn't embarrass us.

Will you judge how long it's been?

No. We want to know what happened last time, if you want to say, and we start from today.

Can I bring someone?

Yes. A friend, partner or family member can sit with you for the talk and the visit.

What if I gag?

Tell us at the start. We can change how we place things, work in shorter stretches, and use a level of sedation if you choose it.
